Gene Chizik? Really?

Car: Auburn. Large Metal Fan: This announcement

This Auburn hire needed to be a grand slam, a hat trick, a triple double, other sports metaphors meaning really freaking awesome hire. But no. Instead it looks like Auburn has hired Gene Chizik

The Gene Chizik that left Auburn for Texas after the 2004 season. The Gene Chizik that is 5-19 as a head coach at Iowa State. The Gene Chizik whose Iowa State team lost its last 10 games of the 2008 season and went 0-8 in the Big 12 without even playing Texas Tech, Oklahoma, or Texas.

I have tried to be very Zen about this whole circus/ blind circle jerk of ineptitude rumored to be a coaching search. But that was when I still had hope a large rabbit was going to be pulled from Jay Jacob's hat and paraded in front of the vultures of the Alabama media as the savior of Auburn football. Gene Chizik is not a rabbit. He is a one-legged hamster that spends most of his day running in his stationary wheel and the rest sleeping in his own excrement. He smells bad and has no friends.

Iowa State couldn't even win a game in the Big 12 North. The division with all of the bad teams. How, how is he going to compete in the SEC? I (mistakenly) believed that Auburn was going to look for a coach with some offensive credentials. Maybe even one with a neat system that works and is fun to watch (looking at you Mike Leach and Paul Johnson). But instead Auburn hires another defensive minded coach. Defense is important. But for once, it would be nice to maintain Auburn's destroyer of world defense and supplement it with a competent offense. Good things happen then. Like 2004, which Gene Chizik was a part of actually...

Perhaps two or three years from now we will look back and consider this to be a great hire. Auburn's first step in a new direction. I hope so. Because right now, it certainly feels like someone (Jay Jacobs methinks) has made a grave mistake.

War Eagle Regardless.
